Phyto-estrogen. Break the word in half and the answer writes itself. The first half says plant. The second half says estrogen. A compound with estrogen in its name is sitting in your soy protein, and you are a man who would rather not have more of it.
The logic builds from there without anybody checking it. Phytoestrogens act like estrogen. Estrogen opposes testosterone. More of one means less of the other. You put the soy protein back on the shelf, and two decades of gym culture nodded along.
Forty-one clinical studies checked every link in that chain.
Does Soy Lower Testosterone in Men?
Soy does not lower testosterone in men. The largest meta-analysis on this question, covering 41 studies in 1,753 men, found zero effect on total testosterone, free testosterone, estradiol, estrone, or SHBG, regardless of dose or duration. A newer dose-response analysis confirmed no relationship between isoflavone intake and testosterone at any amount.

The largest meta-analysis to examine this question pooled 41 studies and 1,753 men. Total testosterone: no effect. Free testosterone: no effect. Estradiol, estrone, SHBG: no effect on any reproductive hormone measured. Not at low doses. Not at high doses. Not in studies lasting weeks and not in studies lasting over a year. The evidence was so consistent that the conclusion came with a qualifier researchers almost never use: additional research is unlikely to change this finding.
A second meta-analysis from 2025 tested the question with a different technique, plotting isoflavone dose against testosterone across eight randomized controlled trials. No linear trend, no nonlinear curve, no threshold where soy started to matter. At every dose anyone actually eats, the answer was the same.
So how does a compound with "estrogen" in its name have zero effect on testosterone?
Because the name oversells the similarity. Isoflavones, the compounds in soy the word refers to, do not act like estrogen in the body. They preferentially bind a different receptor entirely, one that triggers different and sometimes opposite effects depending on the tissue. Pharmacologists classify them as selective estrogen receptor modulators, which is a technical way of saying they are choosy about where they act. Nothing like the blanket hormone the suffix implies.
The fear was built on animal research, where isoflavones did disrupt hormones, but rodents metabolize these compounds through an entirely separate pathway than humans. The belief that traveled through gym culture was assembled from rat data and a scary-sounding suffix. Isoflavones are one compound in a supplement market full of claims, and this one turned out to be the opposite of what the name promised.
One nuance survived the demolition. While testosterone stayed flat at every dose, estradiol, a different hormone, showed a small nonlinear response at very high isoflavone intakes in men who were not exercising. The effect was minor, exercise neutralized it entirely, and the overall result was still non-significant. But it existed, and it earns its space here because honest reporting includes the caveat you would rather skip. The isoflavones that left testosterone untouched behave differently in women's hormonal systems, where the same word means something the science is still sorting out.
A suffix is not a study. A logical chain is not evidence. And a word that sounds like estrogen, when you look past the name, is not the molecule it claimed to be.
