A 2026 study tracked bar velocity rep by rep through multiple sets of bench press, measuring not just how many reps each group completed but exactly where performance diverged. Women averaged 58 total reps before failure. Men averaged 30. Nearly double — at matched relative strength.

Here is what should not make sense about that number: during each individual set, both groups fatigued at exactly the same rate. Velocity loss from the fastest rep to the slowest rep was statistically identical. On a single set taken to failure, men and women performed the same number of reps. This was bench press in trained lifters in their twenties. Whether the same recovery advantage applies to squats, older populations, or different rest intervals is unmeasured. The between-set recovery finding came from an exploratory analysis — the study itself labels the analysis exploratory.

So the advantage has borders. Between-set recovery was dramatically different. Between-session recovery was not. Over seventy-two hours, soreness and estimated strength returned identically for both sexes — even though the women had done nearly double the work. Her advantage is acute.
