The reason lives in how your body reads an exercise. Aniceto’s study measured muscle activation, not growth directly. Activation is a strong proxy — the muscles working hardest during an exercise tend to be the muscles that grow — but it is not the same as measuring size changes over months of training. The sample was small, all women, and both exercises were performed on a Smith machine. The evidence earns a confident directional signal for glutes. It does not yet earn a universal verdict.
