You can squat heavier than you can lunge. That fact alone has settled the debate for most lifters — if loading drives growth, squats build more leg muscle, and lunges are the exercise you skip when time runs short. The weight on the bar has been the entire argument.
When researchers tested both exercises at the same relative intensity, the same rep count, and the same body position, the loading gap vanished from the equation. What remained was the raw signal: which exercise actually drives each leg muscle harder when both are working at equal effort.
Lunges vs Squats for Muscle: The Direct Comparison
Under controlled conditions, lunges activate the glutes significantly more than squats, while quad and hamstring activation is equivalent between the two exercises. The total amount of muscle you build between exercise types is functionally identical — the real difference is which muscles grow more, not whether you grow more overall.

In trained women performing back squats and lunges at 70% of their max, lunges produced significantly greater glute activation than squats (Aniceto et al. 2021, Isokinetics and Exercise Science). The difference was not marginal. It was large — a gap between two genuinely different stimuli, not a statistical borderline.
The quads? Statistically identical between the two exercises. The hamstrings? Also identical. The heavier exercise did not win a single muscle group. Squats matched lunges everywhere else — and lost the glutes by a wide margin.

The reason lives in how your body reads an exercise. Different movements place different muscles under different mechanical demands — and where muscle grows depends on which exercise you choose, not on how much weight you can move. A lunge stretches and loads the glute through a range and angle that a squat does not replicate, even when the squat carries more total load.
When all available evidence on exercise types and total muscle growth was pooled, the overall difference was essentially zero. Neither exercise type builds more muscle overall. Asking which exercise builds MORE never had a meaningful answer. The meaningful question was always which builds WHERE.
Aniceto’s study measured muscle activation, not growth directly. Activation is a strong proxy — the muscles working hardest during an exercise tend to be the muscles that grow — but it is not the same as measuring size changes over months of training. The sample was small, all women, and both exercises were performed on a Smith machine. The evidence earns a confident directional signal for glutes. It does not yet earn a universal verdict.
The principle it supports is larger than lunges and squats. If exercise geometry determines which muscles grow, every exercise choice in your programme carries a regional consequence — and the research on regional hypertrophy maps exactly which exercises grow which parts.
