Creatine supplementation can improve short-term memory and reasoning speed, but the benefit is selective. Young, well-rested adults showed no cognitive change in controlled trials. The answer depends entirely on who you are.
A systematic review tested whether creatine supplementation improves cognition in healthy adults. The pooled results showed gains in short-term memory and reasoning speed. That sounds like a clean yes.
It was not.
Young, well-rested, well-fed adults showed zero change on every cognitive task. No memory improvement. No faster processing. No measurable difference from placebo.
The brains that responded were the ones running closer to empty. Older adults showed gains in recall and spatial memory. Sleep-deprived participants recovered cognitive performance that fatigue had eroded. And vegetarians — whose dietary creatine intake is near zero — outperformed meat-eaters on memory tasks, because their baseline brain stores had more room to fill.

The mechanism is intuitive once you see it. Creatine’s job in any tissue is rapid ATP resupply — the energy currency cells burn under demand. A brain already full of phosphocreatine has nowhere to put extra. A brain running low has a gap, and supplementation fills it. The biggest predictor of whether creatine does anything above the neck is how much creatine your brain already had.
The honest limit: this conclusion rests on a handful of small trials. Every trial leans the same way, the mechanism makes physiological sense, and creatine’s safety profile is among the most established in the supplement aisle. But brain creatine uptake is slower than muscle uptake, the optimal dosing window for cognitive effects is still unclear, and larger trials have not yet confirmed what these smaller ones suggest.
