In 1998, a team at St. John’s Medical College in Bangalore gave eight healthy men in their twenties curcumin capsules and reported that adding black pepper boosted absorption by 2000%. That number is now on millions of supplement bottles, in thousands of TikTok videos, and across every major health website.
Here’s where it comes from.
The researchers measured total curcumin that made it into the blood with and without piperine — the active compound in black pepper. With piperine: 0.08 micrograms per hour per milliliter. Without piperine: 0.004. Divide the first by the second and you get 2000%.
The problem is the 0.004.
Their equipment could detect curcumin down to 0.001. The baseline they’re dividing by — 0.004 — sits just four times above the lowest thing their instrument could see. The paper itself says curcumin without piperine was “either very low or undetectable at most time points in most subjects.”
Change the denominator and the percentage changes with it. If the true baseline were 0.002 instead of 0.004 — a difference the equipment can barely resolve — the number becomes 4000%. If it were 0.008, it drops to 1000%.
The most viral claim in supplement marketing swings between 1000% and 4000% depending on where the baseline lands in the instrument’s noise floor.
The 2000% turmeric-and-black-pepper number traces back to one study from 1998 that divided a measurable amount by a near-zero baseline — and four independent labs have since tried to replicate the result. None succeeded.

When the Baseline Was Real
The same researchers, in the same study, tested piperine in rats. And in rats, the baseline was actually real.
Rats received about 60 times more curcumin per kilogram than the human volunteers. At that dose, curcumin showed up in the blood clearly — a baseline of 1.35 micrograms per milliliter, more than 200 times higher than the human baseline of 0.006.
With a real denominator, piperine’s effect looked different. The absorption boost was 154% — and the increase in total curcumin absorbed wasn’t even statistically significant.
Same study. Same piperine. Same researchers. The only difference was that the rats had enough curcumin in their blood to measure reliably. When the denominator was real, the 2000% collapsed to 154%.
The study was published in Planta Medica in 1998. Within a few years, the 2000% appeared on the label of a patented product. The connection between the researchers and that product was no coincidence.

Who Made the Capsules
One of the study’s six co-authors — M. Majeed — is listed in the paper as affiliated with SAMI Chemicals & Extracts in Bangalore. Majeed founded Sabinsa Corporation, which holds US patent 5,536,506 for BioPerine — piperine marketed as a bioavailability enhancer. [1]
The curcumin and piperine used in the study were supplied by SAMI Chemicals. The capsules the eight volunteers swallowed were prepared by SAMI Chemicals. The study that became the scientific foundation for a patented commercial product was co-authored by the person who patented, manufactured, and sold that product.
That’s a verifiable chain: co-author, founder, patent holder, compound supplier, capsule manufacturer. Each link is documented in either the original paper or in a conflict-of-interest disclosure from a later study that tested the same product. [1]
Which raises a straightforward question: in 27 years since publication, has anyone outside that chain been able to produce the same result?

What Four Other Labs Found
Four independent research teams — across four countries, over 12 years — tested whether piperine improves curcumin absorption in humans. None found what the original study reported.
In 2013, pharmacologists at Tufts University gave volunteers capsules supplied directly by Sabinsa — the same company whose co-founder co-authored the 1998 study. No meaningful changes in curcumin levels. [1]
In 2021, researchers at the University of Hohenheim in Germany compared eight different strategies for improving curcumin absorption. Piperine finished dead last — its numbers were essentially identical to taking curcumin with nothing at all. A micellar formulation achieved 57 times higher absorption. [2]
That same year, the largest replication attempt tested Sabinsa’s own commercial product — C3 Complex plus BioPerine — in 30 volunteers, nearly four times the original sample. No improvement across any of the 15 curcumin-related compounds measured. [3]
That study also revealed a timing problem in the original experiment: curcumin absorption doesn’t peak until about six hours after ingestion. The 1998 team measured for six hours but found curcumin had vanished by three — and with other formulations, the real absorption profile doesn’t peak until hour six. [3]
And in 2025, a team at Amsterdam University Medical Center — with zero industry funding and no competing interests — tested a protocol closely matching the original. Curcumin with piperine remained below what their instruments could quantify. Their conclusion: the addition of piperine is “useless.” [4]
The pattern caught attention beyond the lab.
The United Kingdom’s Committee on Toxicity — the government’s expert body on food safety — independently reviewed the piperine evidence as part of a multi-year turmeric assessment. Their conclusion: the bioavailability claim is “questionable with high uncertainty” and piperine appears to be “a potential promotional or marketing tool from the producers with limited scientific evidence.” [5]

But here’s where the story becomes more honest — and more useful — than a simple debunk.
The Part That’s Actually True
Piperine genuinely inhibits the enzyme that breaks curcumin down. That’s not marketing — it’s pharmacology.
In the rat data from the 1998 study, the speed at which the body cleared curcumin dropped by about a third when piperine was present — a statistically significant change. The biochemistry is real. Piperine does slow curcumin’s breakdown.
What’s unreliable is the claim that this mechanism produces a 2000% improvement in human absorption. Four independent teams tested that claim. None confirmed it. A government food safety committee reviewed the evidence and called it a marketing tool. [5]

The enzymes that break curcumin down can vary between populations due to genetic differences. The study doesn't tell you whether the same results would hold in older adults, women, people of different genetic backgrounds, or anyone taking curcumin with a meal.
This was a single-dose study. Nobody knows what happens with repeated doses over days or weeks — whether the effect builds, fades, or stays the same.
The researchers collected blood for six hours but curcumin had returned to zero by three. A later study found that curcumin absorption with effective formulations doesn't peak until about six hours. The piperine boost was transient.
The study tested purified capsules, not food. Adding turmeric and black pepper to a meal involves fat, heat, fiber, and other compounds that change absorption in ways this study didn't measure.
The evidence that the 2000% claim is unreliable is strong. Four independent labs in four countries failed to replicate it. A government food safety committee independently reached the same conclusion.
The evidence that piperine does something is moderate — the mechanism is real (it slows curcumin breakdown) but the magnitude of the effect in humans is unknown.
What nobody can tell you yet is how much piperine actually helps in humans. Somewhere between 0% and 154%, based on the animal data — but no human study outside the original has confirmed any specific number.
