Every turmeric supplement in your cabinet, every health article you have bookmarked, every influencer who told you to add a pinch of black pepper — they are all repeating the same number from the same experiment. What none of them mentioned is how that number was calculated.

The 2000% comes from a single study published in 1998. Eight healthy young men in Bangalore took curcumin capsules. Once with piperine — the active compound in black pepper. Once without.

Without piperine, curcumin in their blood registered at 0.004. That is just four times above the lowest level the equipment could detect. With piperine, it rose to 0.08.

Divide 0.08 by 0.004 and you get 2000%.

The math is correct. The problem is the denominator. When your starting point is barely above zero, any small increase looks enormous as a percentage.

The same study tested the same piperine in rats, where curcumin was actually measurable in the blood. The enhancement dropped to 154%.

That was too small to rule out chance.

Twenty-Seven Years, Zero Replications

Between 2013 and 2025, four independent labs tried to reproduce the boost. A team at Tufts tested the patent holder's own curcumin-piperine product. No meaningful change. A German university compared eight different ways to boost absorption. Piperine ranked dead last. Its blood levels were the same as taking curcumin alone.

The winner — tiny fat droplets called micelles — achieved 57 times higher levels.

The largest trial enrolled 30 people and tested every curcumin product the patent holder's company sells. No improvement across any of them. Kroon's 2025 team at Amsterdam's university hospital found curcumin with piperine below the limit they could measure. Zero industry funding. Their conclusion: "addition of piperine is useless."
