Every turmeric supplement in your cabinet, every health article you have bookmarked, every influencer who told you to add a pinch of black pepper — they are all repeating the same number from the same experiment. What none of them mentioned is how that number was calculated.
The 2000% comes from a single study published in 1998. Eight healthy young men in Bangalore took curcumin capsules. Once with piperine — the active compound in black pepper. Once without.
Without piperine, curcumin in their blood registered at 0.004. That is just four times above the lowest level the equipment could detect. With piperine, it rose to 0.08.
Divide 0.08 by 0.004 and you get 2000%.
The math is correct. The problem is the denominator. When your starting point is barely above zero, any small increase looks enormous as a percentage.
The same study tested the same piperine in rats, where curcumin was actually measurable in the blood. The enhancement dropped to 154%.
That was too small to rule out chance.
Twenty-Seven Years, Zero Replications
Between 2013 and 2025, four independent labs tried to reproduce the boost. A team at Tufts tested the patent holder's own curcumin-piperine product. No meaningful change. A German university compared eight different ways to boost absorption. Piperine ranked dead last. Its blood levels were the same as taking curcumin alone.
The winner — tiny fat droplets called micelles — achieved 57 times higher levels.
The largest trial enrolled 30 people and tested every curcumin product the patent holder's company sells. No improvement across any of them. Kroon's 2025 team at Amsterdam's university hospital found curcumin with piperine below the limit they could measure. Zero industry funding. Their conclusion: "addition of piperine is useless."
Four laboratories. Three countries. Twenty-seven years.
None could reproduce the finding.
What kept the number alive was not evidence. The co-author of the 1998 study, M. Majeed, founded Sabinsa Corporation. His company holds the BioPerine patent and makes the piperine sold in supplements worldwide. His company supplied the capsules for the experiment. The 2000% figure powered a global product line for nearly three decades.
The UK government's Committee on Toxicity did their own review. They called the claim "questionable with high uncertainty" and "a potential promotional or marketing tool."
They also noted something telling: for years, no published study reported a negative result for piperine. The kind of gap that suggests negative findings went unreported, not that they did not exist.
The Feature That Became the Risk
The mechanism behind piperine is real. It slows liver enzymes that break curcumin down before it reaches the bloodstream. No one disputes this.
But those same enzymes process roughly half of all commonly prescribed medications.
The UK's drug-induced liver injury database recorded ten turmeric-related injuries out of 2,392 total cases. When researchers chemically analyzed the supplements involved, every one of the seven products tested contained piperine. Seven of the ten patients carried a specific genetic marker. One patient died.
The evidence does not prove piperine caused the injuries. But the pattern is hard to ignore. The same enzyme-blocking sold as a benefit can slow how your body clears certain drugs.
At food-level doses in cooking, the evidence raises no concern. At supplement doses alongside medication, the evidence raises a question worth bringing to whoever prescribed them.
The Price of an Unreplicated Number
Based on what we examined, a turmeric supplement with piperine typically costs 30 to 60 percent more per bottle. That markup buys a single number from one study of eight men — a number that four independent labs over 27 years could not reproduce.
Cook with turmeric and black pepper because they taste good together. Not because of a percentage that no lab has been able to confirm.
The evidence for what actually helps your body absorb more from food is much stronger. Decades of testing point to something simpler and cheaper than any supplement: a drizzle of oil on your vegetables.
