Progressive overload is the one rule every lifter learns first. Add more weight to the bar. That is the instruction, and the phrase itself has narrowed until that is the entire instruction — overload welded to one variable, one direction, one measure of whether a session counted.

Load independence: Schoenfeld et al. (2017) meta-analyzed 21 studies (n=1,090) comparing low-load (≤60% 1RM) and high-load (>60% 1RM) resistance training. Hypertrophy was similar between conditions (ES: 0.03, 95% CI: −0.16 to 0.22). Confirmed at broader scale by Currier et al. (2023, BJSM) in a network meta-analysis of 192 articles: all load prescriptions comparably promoted hypertrophy; only maximal strength favored >80% 1RM.

Volume dose–response: Pelland et al. (2025) applied Bayesian meta-regression to 67 studies (n=2,058). Posterior probability of volume driving hypertrophy: 100%. Best-fit models showed diminishing returns, with strength plateauing more sharply (~4 sets) than hypertrophy.
