A 2024 trial gave trained lifters a nine-week program with 90 sets per week, every set taken to failure. One group trained straight through. The other took a full week off at the midpoint — the classic scheduled deload.

Muscle growth was identical. The deload didn't help — but a week off didn't cost muscle either. The real damage was elsewhere.

Reducing volume, dropping intensity, or switching to lighter work might produce different results. No one has tested that with the same rigor yet. The evidence tells you that a full week off doesn't help and may cost strength. It doesn't tell you that every form of planned recovery is useless.

The real signal from this research isn't a blanket verdict on deloads. It's simpler: listen to your body, not your calendar. A pre-scheduled week off when you feel fine may cost you the strength it was designed to protect. Design: Randomized controlled trial. 39 resistance-trained participants (22.1 ± 2.6 years, 3.7 ± 2.6 years training experience). 9-week supervised program, 90 weekly sets to failure. TRAD (continuous) vs DL (one-week cessation at midpoint).

Primary outcomes: Muscle thickness (vastus lateralis, biceps brachii) measured via ultrasound. Maximal strength (1RM back squat, isometric mid-thigh pull). Subjective wellbeing and motivation assessed post-intervention.

Key findings: Muscle thickness changes virtually identical between groups (VL: TRAD +5.7% vs DL +4.0%, posterior probability of TRAD superiority 77%). 1RM back squat favored TRAD (87% posterior probability).
