The calorie comparison settles the beer-versus-wine question before anyone reads the first paragraph. Beer runs roughly 150 calories per standard glass, wine closer to 120, and the verdict sounds obvious. But when body scans measured what actually accumulates as belly fat, the calorie gap was measuring the wrong thing entirely.
Is beer or wine actually worse for belly fat?
Beer drinkers carry 46% more visceral belly fat than red wine drinkers (1.53 kg versus 1.05 kg, measured by DXA body scans). A DXA body scan (the gold standard for measuring where fat lives inside your body) found that beer and red wine push visceral belly fat in opposite metabolic directions. Beer consumption tracked with more visceral fat. Red wine tracked with less. Not a little less. Metabolically opposite.
The scale of the gap dwarfs the calorie difference. Beer drinkers carried 46% more visceral fat than red wine drinkers, 1.53 kilograms versus 1.05 kilograms of the deep abdominal fat that wraps around organs. A 30-calorie-per-glass difference doesn’t produce a 46% gap in visceral fat. Something else does.
Beer drives that accumulation through metabolic machinery no calorie label captures: disrupted blood fats and insulin resistance, the machinery that tells your body to store fat deep in the abdomen rather than under the skin.
Red wine runs the opposite direction. The association with less visceral fat tracked through reduced inflammation and elevated protective cholesterol. Resveratrol, a compound found in higher concentrations in red wine than white, damps down inflammation in fat cells and discourages the kind of storage that builds a gut. The two beverages aren’t on different points of the same spectrum. They’re on different spectrums entirely.
The broadest evidence base on alcohol and obesity (127 studies, 1.6 million people) couldn’t answer this question because the studies it analyzed never separated beverage types. What that broader evidence base did reveal is this: the dietary pattern around the drink may matter no less than the drink itself.
Beer drinkers in the body-scan study ate more grains, fewer fruits, and more processed food than nearly every other group. Wine drinkers ate fewer processed foods and less red meat. The beverage is partly a signal for the plate sitting next to it, and alcohol already rewires what you reach for once the first glass goes down.
That pattern deserves an honest asterisk. The body-scan data comes from older adults in one demographic group, the alcohol intake was self-reported, and no observational study can prove that beer caused the extra belly fat rather than simply traveling alongside it. That difference is measured and documented, not estimated, but calling it proof would overstate what an observational study can honestly deliver.
Beer is measurably worse for belly fat than wine, and what separates them runs deeper than most articles about this question suggest. The metabolic pathways diverge. The dietary patterns diverge. The 30 calories per glass that most coverage leads with barely scratches the surface of why beer drinkers carry a measurably thicker layer of visceral fat.
But if the bigger driver is what sits on the plate next to the glass, and if moderate drinkers somehow weigh less than people who never drink at all, then the relationship between alcohol and your body is running on rules no calorie label has ever shown.
