Neither the 'alcohol makes you fat' crowd nor the 'wine is fine' crowd is working from clean data. The entire debate rests on the weakest possible evidence grade, and the real cost was hiding in the food around the drink, not the drink itself.

The cohort studies told an even clearer story. These are the studies that follow the same people for years, the designs best equipped to detect whether one thing actually causes another. Across all four weight outcomes, the cohort results found zero significant associations. Every single result crossed the line where the association is zero.

The Category You're Standing In
Researchers broke the data down by drinking level: light, moderate, and heavy, each compared separately to non-drinkers.
Moderate drinkers, those consuming roughly one to two standard drinks per day, had 16% lower odds of obesity than people who don't drink at all. Not equal odds. Lower. Your tracking app logs the wine at 125 calories. It can't see the 82 extra food calories your appetite quietly adds. And it can't predict that tomorrow you won't eat less to balance it out.

The Kwok satellite tested a narrower group: 701 people, predominantly female (60%), aged 18-37, in controlled lab settings. The 256-calorie surplus was measured under lab conditions, which may not perfectly reflect a Friday evening at home.

Strong enough to change how you track, honest enough to admit the weight question is still open.
The scale didn't budge for moderate drinkers. But body composition has layers the scale never shows. While this analysis tracked what people weighed, a separate metabolic ward study tracked what happened to fat burning the moment alcohol entered the bloodstream.
