Every gym has the same scene before the first set. Hamstrings pulled against a bench. A quad held behind someone's back. Arm circles in the mirror. A choreography so universal that dozens of people perform it simultaneously — without coordinating, without thinking, without once asking if any of it works.
The routine was inherited. PE class started with it. A coach reinforced it. A parent warned that skipping it meant getting hurt. Nobody ever showed you evidence that stretching before exercise prevents injury. The ritual arrived before the question did.
The question has since been answered. In 2025, an international panel of twenty stretching researchers from twelve countries evaluated every systematic review on the subject and reached 85% agreement: stretching should not be recommended for injury prevention.

The verdict is sharper than a simple no. Static stretching — the held hamstring, the quad pull — may slightly reduce the chance of muscle injuries. A partial win, until the fine print: those reductions appear to be compensated by increases in bone and joint injuries.

The honest caveat: the evidence base connecting stretching to injury rates is still small. The trade-off between injury types comes from a limited number of studies, and the panel said so directly. Their recommendation rests on the best available evidence — every systematic review to date — not on certainty.
What the evidence does support for injury prevention sits on a different shelf: strength training, stability work, and postural control. The five minutes before your workout might matter more than you assumed — just not spent in the position you've been holding since your first PE class.
