But the incline treadmill lights up more muscles simultaneously and absorbs the repetitive impact that accumulates over months of daily sessions — a trade that matters more the closer you examine what incline walking actually does.
Same speed, same grade, different brand — different workout. One machine — its deck suspended at the front like a diving board — drove heart rates nearly seven beats per minute higher than the rigid-deck model at identical settings. The machine you pick matters. But the brand of machine you use might matter just as much, and no calorie display accounts for that.
And a detail for anyone who uses the StairMaster: climbing one step at a time burns more total calories than skipping steps. The rate per minute is lower — but single-stepping takes longer per floor, and the extra time more than compensates. Two honest caveats. The stair climbing energy data comes from real staircases, not a StairMaster machine — the rotating steps, the handrail geometry, and the pacing all differ.
