Incline walking didn't just cost more energy. It moved you up a ranking.
Whether you set the grade to 5% or follow the 12-3-30 protocol at 12%, the same shift happens: your walk leaves the low-intensity zone. The measured data covers grades up to 10% — at steeper settings, the exact premium hasn't been quantified the same way, but the direction holds.
Step off the treadmill, and the picture gets more honest. Even in fit adults measured at Stanford, the fat-loss payoff didn't scale the way a calorie counter implies. All the exercise you do — every walk, every session, every flight of stairs — explains roughly 7 to 9 percent of the gap in daily calorie burn between individuals.
