The word in the middle of that sentence is doing more work than it looks. “Muscle” in your search meant one thing, a substance that shrinks at some knowable rate. Muscle covers two measurements that decline on completely different clocks. One is size. The other is what that size can do.

Whether the same 2-to-5x ratio holds precisely at 38 has not been measured with the same rigor. The pattern holds across every age group studied. The exact magnitude at 40 is less nailed down than at 75.
The rate you came for was always real. It just measured the part of muscle loss you can see. The next time something feels different (a grip that adjusts, stairs that take a beat longer), the number to wonder about is not how much your muscles have shrunk. It is how much force they have lost. The threshold that decides whether your muscles still hear the rebuild signal changes after 40, and most programs never adjust for it.
