The fat burning zone is real. Your body burns a higher percentage of calories from fat at lower intensities — the display on the treadmill got the physiology right. What it doesn't show is the difference between a percentage and a total.
At lower intensity, a higher share of your energy comes from fat. At higher intensity, that share drops — but the total calorie burn climbs so much that you end up burning more actual fat despite the smaller percentage. The zone measures the right thing and answers the wrong question — the same kind of measurement mismatch that makes people think sweating more means burning more fat.

Eighty-five studies involving 5,761 people have tested what intensity actually does to body composition and fitness. Neither answer supports staying in the zone.
When total exercise volume is matched — same duration, same frequency, same total work — intensity does not significantly predict fitness improvement. How hard you go and how much your fitness improves are barely connected once you control for how much you do. The zone promises that a specific intensity range is superior. The data says the range barely registers.
For actual weight loss during a calorie deficit, high-intensity aerobic exercise ranks first. The intensity the zone tells you to avoid produces the most weight loss — the zone's advice runs opposite to the evidence.
Both moderate and high intensity produce significant fitness gains. A lighter session still builds fitness. The problem is the premise that lighter is better for fat loss — the evidence runs the other way.
Here is the finding that makes the picture genuinely complicated. During a calorie deficit — the exact condition most people in the fat burning zone are chasing — the intensity relationship reverses for muscle. Moderate-to-low intensity resistance training preserves lean mass better than high intensity during a cut — the evidence points clearly in that direction, even if the exact margin is still being measured. For weight loss, go harder. For holding onto muscle while you lose fat, moderate wins.
