The high-intensity groups improved their fitness (measured as peak oxygen uptake) by an average of 2.8 mL/kg/min. The moderate groups improved by 2.1. The gap between them: 0.7 mL/kg/min.

In a unit that connects to daily life: 0.7 mL/kg/min converts to 0.2 METs. One MET is the energy your body burns sitting in a chair. The entire intensity debate was fighting over one-fifth of what it costs your body to sit still.

Less Than Half the Recommended Time

The intensity finding is not the only assumption this meta-analysis challenges.

When the researchers examined how total exercise volume related to fitness gains, the pattern was clear.

Volumes as low as roughly 250 MET-minutes per week — about 70 minutes of moderate exercise — produced fitness gains similar to volumes two to three times higher.
