Flat bench for the overall chest. Incline bench for the upper chest. Both in the same workout, because covering everything is the point of a well-built program.

That pairing has survived on a specific kind of evidence: activation. Sensors taped to the chest during pressing show more electrical activity in the upper fibers when the bench is inclined. More activation was assumed to mean more growth. Nobody had measured whether it actually did.

Does Incline Bench Actually Build Your Upper Chest?

In 2020, a team of researchers did what the activation studies never had. They measured actual muscle thickness with ultrasound — not electrical signals during a set, but physical changes in the tissue after eight weeks of training. Three groups pressed under different conditions: flat only, incline only, or both.

The upper chest told a clean story. Incline-only grew the upper portion of the pec significantly more than flat-only. The fibers closest to the collarbone thickened in a way flat pressing could not match.

Incline bench pressing preferentially builds the upper chest — the only exercise angle shown to produce significantly greater upper-pec thickness in direct measurement. Lifters who combined incline with flat pressing grew less upper chest than those who did incline alone, because splitting volume between two exercises reduced the targeted sets.

Then the finding nobody programs for. The group that did both exercises — flat and incline together, the exact split most lifters run — grew less upper chest than the incline-only group.

The cost was volume. Combining two exercises meant splitting the total pressing sets between them. The incline work that was supposed to build the upper chest got half the dedicated sets. Coverage had a price: the variety meant to enhance the program was taking sets away from the exercise that mattered most.

The mechanism underneath tracks with what newer research has shown in other muscle groups. Changing the angle of a press changes the position of your upper arm relative to your torso, which shifts the load onto different fibers of the same muscle. The chest is not one uniform slab — it is a fan of fibers that respond to the direction of force.

The mid and lower chest? Grew equally across all three groups. Incline pressing did not sacrifice anything below. It only built more on top.

The honest ceiling: these were beginners training for eight weeks. Whether the same upper-chest advantage holds for experienced lifters over longer timelines sits beyond what this data can show.

Incline bench did its job. It builds the upper chest in a way flat pressing cannot. The cost was invisible — every set of flat pressing that replaced an incline set was a set your upper chest could not use to grow. The next variable to get right is not which exercises to include, but how many sets each one actually needs.

Design: Randomized controlled trial. 47 untrained men assigned to horizontal-only (n=15), incline-only (n=15), or combination (n=17). Training: Smith machine, 8–12RM, 8 weeks, once per week. Volume progressed from 4 to 6 sets (single-exercise groups) and 2 to 3 sets per exercise (combination group). Muscle thickness measured via B-mode ultrasound at 2nd, 3rd, and 5th intercostal spaces.
