Do Standing and Seated Calf Raises Build Different Calf Muscles?

After twelve weeks of training, the standing leg grew every calf muscle. Its medial gastrocnemius, the largest head of the calf, grew substantially with standing and barely changed with seated. The lateral gastrocnemius followed the same pattern.

The soleus was supposed to be seated’s territory. Instead, it grew equally from both exercises. Standing produced the same soleus growth as seated, with a difference so trivial it was statistically meaningless.

Put those two findings together and the neat division collapses. Standing calf raises grew the gastrocnemius AND the soleus. Seated calf raises grew only the soleus and produced zero significant growth in either head of the gastrocnemius.

Why? Geometry. Your gastrocnemius crosses two joints: the ankle and the knee. When you sit down and bend your knee to ninety degrees, that muscle shortens so much that its fibers can barely change length during the exercise. It is mechanically switched off. Not from poor effort or bad form, but because the joint position makes the muscle physically unable to work.

A dedicated comparison trial confirmed this using MRI, the most precise method for measuring muscle volume. Fourteen participants trained one leg standing and the other seated for twelve weeks. In the seated leg, neither head of the gastrocnemius grew significantly.

A second study extended the finding to experienced lifters over eight weeks. The probability that the medial gastrocnemius favored standing reached 99.1 percent. Beginners or experienced, the pattern held.

One honest wrinkle: the lateral gastrocnemius, the smaller outer head, told a less consistent story across the two studies. One found a clear advantage for standing. The other found the result too close to call. Training status may explain that gap, since untrained participants tend to show larger responses. For the medial gastrocnemius, both studies agreed without reservation.

None of this means seated calf raises are harmful. They still grow the soleus just fine. But if your leg day is packed and you want the single exercise that covers all three calf muscles, the evidence on exercise selection and regional muscle growth leans toward a single answer.
