Do Night Shift Workers Eat Less Protein

The largest systematic review on this topic — Clark and colleagues, pooling 31 studies across 18,196 shift workers — found a trend toward lower protein intake. Three of sixteen studies reporting macronutrients found significantly lower protein in rotating shift workers. One found the opposite. The rest found no meaningful difference.

That is an honest answer, and an unsatisfying one. A trend that weak does not explain why so many shift workers feel their body composition stalling despite eating enough.

The same review found something sharper. Shift workers consume more total energy than day workers — roughly 264 kilojoules per day more, not less. They are not under-eating. The calories are arriving. Where the picture breaks is in the composition of those calories and the pattern they arrive in.

Here is what that pattern looks like: 44 percent of rotating shift workers snack at night, compared to 6 percent of day workers. Only 21 percent of shift workers eat three structured meals a day — among day workers, that number is 55 percent. Energy shifts toward the second half of the day. Discretionary foods replace core foods. The eating schedule stops being a schedule at all.

This matters for protein specifically because of how muscle uses it. Spreading the same total grams of protein evenly across three or four meals turns 25 to 48 percent more of that protein into muscle over a full day than consuming the same total in two large loads or irregular pulses.

The grams did not change. The container did. And the container determined how much of that protein actually built anything.

A shift worker eating the same daily protein as their day-shift training partner — but eating it at 3 AM from a vending machine, then in one large meal after the shift, then skipping the third because sleep won — is building measurably less muscle from every gram.

The honest caveat: three studies out of sixteen is a trend, not a verdict. One study found the opposite. The confidence to generalise is low, and the review’s own language — “compromised dietary patterns” — describes a pattern observed in the data, not a rule that applies to every shift worker.

But if the protein question was ever going to have a clean answer, it would have shown up in thirty-one studies. What showed up instead was that the way shift workers eat — chaotic meals, night snacking, the absence of any repeating structure — independently costs them protein they already consumed.

The fix that follows from this is a different shape than what most shift workers expect. Adding grams was never the bottleneck. Distributing the grams already there across structured meals — even rough ones, even shifted ones — closes the gap without buying a single extra supplement.
