Who Funded the Biggest Trial

Before that result rewrites the checklist, two things about it need to be on the table.

The first: one of the two diet-soda trials — Peters 2014, which carried most of the statistical weight in the pooled result — was funded by the American Beverage Association. [1] The trial was peer-reviewed. It passed the research team’s risk-of-bias assessment.

Water, in theory, can nudge weight loss through thermogenesis — the body burns a small amount of energy warming cold water to body temperature. That process is partly driven by a stress-response signal that rises after drinking.

But in people carrying extra weight, that signal tends to be elevated already — a side effect of the metabolic changes that come with higher body fat. The system is already running near capacity. Drinking more water does not push it further.

The authors put it carefully: the expected weight-reducing effect of water “might not manifest” in overweight and obese individuals because the relevant pathway is already engaged.
