The first: Kjeldahl, the standard the industry uses. The second: a full amino-acid profile that maps exactly which molecules are present, not just total nitrogen.

The products most consumers would instinctively trust — pharmaceutical grade, the regulated category — failed at a higher rate than the less-regulated nutraceutical products. The hierarchy between trustworthy and untrustworthy ran backward from what most buyers expect.
These products were purchased in a single country and each was tested from one production batch — the findings are a snapshot, not a verdict on every tub in every country. Global surveys, though, describe protein shortfalls of 11 to 17% in sports foods across international markets. The vulnerability Kjeldahl creates is not confined to one shelf.
An amino-acid profile — the test that asks what the nitrogen belongs to, not just how much is there — can reveal the kind of nitrogen spiking that Kjeldahl misses. One counts nitrogen atoms. The other reveals whether those atoms came from protein.
Your sorting system — the brand, the seal, the reviews — still matters. It just cannot check the one thing you assumed it checked. Whether the powder changes anything your next meal couldn’t is a different question, and one where the gap between marketing and evidence runs in a direction you might not expect.
