The verdict ran backward. Soy protein powder matched milk protein for building muscle — a difference too small to matter. Meanwhile, whole-food plant-based diets lost meaningful muscle compared to animal-protein diets. Same plant species. Opposite outcomes depending on whether the protein was isolated into powder or eaten as whole food.
Both results came from the same 2025 meta-analysis, evaluated under identical methodology — not a cherry-picked cross-study comparison, but two subgroups measured side by side.
The most likely explanation cuts against everything the hierarchy predicts. Whole plant foods carry compounds — fibre matrices, protease inhibitors, and other molecules — that interfere with protein digestion. Isolation strips those compounds out.
The pattern sharpens within a single plant species. Soy protein isolate scores the highest protein quality of all soy products. Tofu — the same plant, minimal processing — scores the lowest. The more processing the soy undergoes, the more digestible the protein becomes. The filter did not just fail for one comparison. It pointed backward across the entire processing gradient.
The thing the filter treats as a downgrade is the thing that solves the digestibility problem.
That reversal applies specifically to plant protein and muscle. For other nutrients — fibre, micronutrients, phytochemicals — the whole-food rule may still hold. The evidence breaks the hierarchy for one specific case, not for all of them. Reaching for lentils over powder is not wrong about everything. It is wrong about the one thing that matters most if muscle is the goal.
