That pull has been measured. Across 38 feeding trials where people could eat whatever they wanted, heavier individuals consistently ate more protein. Not more food in general. Specifically more protein. Non-protein intake barely changed with body weight. Your body is not just hungry. It is reaching for something specific.
So if your body is already pulling you toward more protein, the natural question is whether heavier people actually need a higher protein percentage of their total calories. It is the question your macro tracker keeps trying to answer every time you stare at the pie chart. And the answer is stranger than the chart makes it look.
Do Heavier People Need a Higher Protein Percentage?

Your body was right to want more protein. But the percentage framing was pointing at the wrong tissue. Protein needs are driven almost entirely by lean mass — the muscle, bone, and organs that actually use protein. Fat mass does not increase protein requirements. Above a BMI of 30, extra weight is carried by tissue that does not consume protein for repair, rebuilding, or daily function.
Heavier people often do need more total grams of protein, because higher body weight usually comes with more lean mass underneath the fat. Your appetite was tracking something real. A practical starting point: cap the body weight you use for protein calculations at a BMI of 30. Everything above that threshold is fat mass that needs no extra protein. At 119 kilograms (262 pounds) and a BMI of 44, that cap drops the daily target from over 190 grams to roughly 98 to 113. Close to half. If you have been chasing a number built from your full weight, your actual need may be far lower than the tracker suggested.
