The zone chart on your wrist says easy should sit between 125 and 142. Eight minutes into the run, the screen reads 161. You slow to a shuffle. Two minutes later it barely drops. Your heart rate is running high on what should be an easy run, and you have no idea why.
You tightened the strap. Wondered whether the sensor was off, whether you slept badly, whether something medical is happening that a doctor should hear about. Three explanations you have tested in your head for weeks. None of them settled anything.
The first diagnosis — broken sensor — has an answer. A meta-analysis pooling 37 separate studies found that 97.3% confirmed wearable heart rate monitors are accurate, with an average measurement error below 5%. If the screen says 161, that is where your heart rate actually is. The watch told the truth.
Which means the problem is not what is measuring your heart rate. It is what you are measuring it against.

Zone 2, on most watches, is a fixed percentage of your maximum heart rate — typically somewhere around 60 to 70%. The assumption behind the formula is that the same percentage produces the same metabolic response in every person. When researchers tested that assumption across 50 trained cyclists, the variation between individuals ranged from 6% to 29% depending on which marker they used. A difference that sounds small — 5% of your heart rate — translates to roughly 10 beats per minute. Enough to place you in what feels like threshold training even though the formula promised Zone 2.
The cyclists in that study were experienced amateurs, not runners, so the exact ranges may shift across sports. But the variability itself is physiological — your body’s metabolic response to a fixed heart rate percentage is individual regardless of whether you run, ride, or row.

Beyond the formula, something else drives the number up during longer sessions. Your heart rate drifts upward even when your pace stays constant. As you sweat and lose fluid, your blood volume drops. Your body diverts blood toward the skin to manage heat. With less blood returning to the heart per beat, it compensates by beating faster. A heart rate that starts at 140 and climbs to 158 over 45 minutes is not a sign you pushed too hard. It is your cardiovascular system managing its own temperature.
And the third piece: aerobic fitness itself. A heart that has not yet adapted to endurance work pushes less blood per beat, so it has to beat more often to deliver the same oxygen. Two people running side by side, matching stride for stride, can show heart rates 20 beats apart for this reason alone. Individual responses to moderate-intensity exercise vary so widely that the same workout can place two people in completely different physiological zones — and for roughly one in five people, moderate-intensity training may not produce the expected aerobic gains at all.
The practical replacement for a formula that was never built for your body requires no formula at all. Can you hold a conversation while running? If you can speak in full sentences, you are in your Zone 2 — regardless of what the number says. If you cannot, you have crossed your threshold regardless of what the chart promised. As your cardiovascular system adapts over weeks, that same heart pushes more blood per beat, and the number that worried you today starts dropping on its own.
Track your own trend over weeks, not someone else’s formula over a single session. Your heart rate reading is accurate. The framework you were judging it against was never calibrated to your physiology.
And once you are training in your actual Zone 2 — the one your body defined, not a population average — how that training reshapes your cardiovascular system is worth knowing.
