The improvement showed up across five separate tests, holding regardless of exercise type or hydration method. The mechanism is intuitive: the extra fluid expands your blood volume, which keeps your heart rate lower and your core temperature cooler. Your body's cooling system runs with more slack, so fatigue arrives later.

The entire body of research comes from one world: endurance athletes, cyclists and runners pushing through sessions of 60 minutes or more in controlled heat chambers at 30°C and above. A normal gym session — indoors, air-conditioned, under 75 minutes — has never been tested once. The most studied version of this question has never actually been asked about the workout most people do.

That gap is not an oversight. The mechanism that produced those endurance gains — expanding blood volume to keep your body cooler — only matters when heat is what limits you. In a temperature-controlled gym, your cooling system is not the bottleneck.

The protocols that produced the positive results involved loading 400 to 600 milliliters of extra fluid, often with glycerol or sodium to help the body hold onto it. That bears no resemblance to sipping an extra glass before you walk out the door. That is drinking until your stomach protests.
