Muscle or calories. The question sorts walking into one of two bins, and every article in the search results picks the same one. Walking doesn't really build muscle, they all agree, so the value must sit on the calorie side. One or the other.

The muscle side falls quickly. In the largest comparison of exercise modes ever assembled, aerobic training preserved about a kilogram less lean mass than resistance training over the same period. Both halves of the question collapse into the same missing piece. Adding resistance training to a walking routine preserves the lean mass that aerobic-only exercise quietly sheds, without slowing fat loss by a single gram. When total effort was matched across walking, weights, and the combination, every measurable difference in body composition disappeared. The label on the exercise stopped mattering. Only the effort predicted the outcome.

The muscle-preservation gap is real, though the certainty has a crack in it. Remove a handful of individual trials and the gap narrows from confident to borderline. The direction holds across every re-analysis. The margin's precision does not.

Pontzer et al. 2016 (Current Biology) measured total energy expenditure via doubly labeled water in 332 adults across 5 populations.

Key findings. Aerobic training preserved 0.88 kg less fat-free mass than resistance training (95% CI: −1.73 to −0.03, p = 0.04). Aerobic training reduced fat mass by 1.06 kg more than resistance training (95% CI: −1.88 to −0.24, p = 0.01). Under matched workloads, no significant differences existed between any exercise mode for any body composition measure (p > 0.05). Physical activity explained 7–9% of total energy expenditure variation after controlling for anthropometric variables. Fat-free mass was the strongest anthropometric correlate of total energy expenditure.

Limitations. The fat-free mass preservation finding (AT vs RT) is sensitive to individual study removal — going from significant to non-significant in leave-one-out sensitivity analysis. The direction holds; the precision margin does not. Pontzer 2016 is a cross-sectional analysis — the constrained energy model is observational, not experimentally tested via intervention.
