Cold exposure triggers testosterone production. TikTok trainers say it, Reddit threads repeat it, cold-plunge companies build their marketing around it. The confidence behind the claim is enormous. The evidence, until very recently, did not exist.
Does a Cold Shower Actually Boost Testosterone?
The direct experiment finally happened in 2026. Cold showers, testosterone, male athletes: the exact claim tested under controlled conditions. The effect size was 0.02, not small, not modest, but negligible. The measurement could not tell cold showers apart from doing absolutely nothing.

The at-rest answer is definitive. The unresolved question: what about right after lifting? Most men taking cold showers do it post-workout, expecting the cold to preserve the testosterone spike from training.
A 2019 trial tested that scenario. After heavy squats, one group did cold water immersion while the other recovered passively. Within an hour, the cold group's testosterone had dropped 10.4% below baseline. The control group barely moved. The protocol most lifters believe enhances their hormonal response to training was suppressing it.
Cold showers do not raise testosterone. The only published study to test cold showers directly on testosterone in male athletes found an effect size of 0.02, statistically indistinguishable from zero. Three confusions keep the myth alive. The adrenaline rush after cold water is real and powerful, but adrenaline is not testosterone. Cold matters for sperm production, but testicular temperature sensitivity is not testosterone synthesis.
The energy you feel stepping out of cold water is norepinephrine, not testosterone. The alarm system fires. The building system does not notice.
The pattern is not unique to testosterone. Cold exposure and fat burning followed the same arc: a real physiological response repackaged as a bigger claim than the evidence supports.
The evidence has honest limits. Both studies tested small groups. The post-exercise trial used full-body immersion rather than a shower, and measured only a single session.
