Sprint researchers proved that link decades ago — athletes with higher aerobic fitness genuinely do recover faster between all-out efforts. The finding has replicated too many times to argue with.

So the logic extends itself: if a bigger aerobic engine speeds up recovery between sprints, it should speed up recovery between sets of squats — more recovery, more reps, more volume, more muscle. Does Cardio Actually Help Your Lifting?

The chain was finally tested where it matters — not in sprinters, not in cyclists, but in trained lifters doing barbell squats and knee extensions to failure.

Aerobic fitness did not predict recovery between sets. The relationship was not small or borderline. It was absent — across every index of fatigue and recovery the researchers tracked, the connection between VO2max and what happened between sets was a blank.

The group behind that test — a team at the Karolinska Institute, published in 2024 — had expected the opposite. Their own data returned nothing.

They designed the study hypothesizing that aerobic fitness would predict faster recovery.

That result lands harder when you look at the study most often cited as evidence the chain works. A 2014 paper in the NSCA’s journal did find that aerobically fitter men squeezed out more squat reps with short rest intervals. That is the half that circulates. In the same seventeen men, higher aerobic fitness tracked with markedly lower maximal strength in both squat and bench press. A correlation in seventeen people cannot separate fitness from body size — but the half of the result that gets quoted never mentions the other half.

Even over months, the trend does not appear. The chronic effect of adding cardio to a lifting program on strength is indistinguishable from zero. Hypertrophy has not moved either. The only signal that reaches significance is not a benefit — explosive power takes a small, consistent dip when cardio enters the program.

Two possibilities keep the door from closing completely. The lifters in the direct test were already moderately fit — their average aerobic capacity sat well above the sedentary floor. A benefit that only appears below that fitness level, or only emerges after more than three sets, has not been ruled out. What has been ruled out is the version your feed is selling — the one where a bigger engine reliably means faster recovery under a loaded barbell.

One transfer does hold up, though. Lifting improves aerobic capacity as effectively as cardio does — and that direction, unlike this one, survives every test it has been given. Whether cardio interferes with muscle at all has a more decisive answer.
