Beta-alanine has one job your body cannot do efficiently on its own. It is the raw ingredient your muscles need to build carnosine, a molecule that acts as an acid buffer inside the cell. When you push into a hard set, the burning sensation that forces you to stop is partly driven by acid building up faster than your body can clear it. Carnosine absorbs that acid, buying your muscles a few extra seconds before the signal to quit arrives.

The ritual and the biochemistry run on different clocks. Your muscles stockpile carnosine slowly. Four weeks of daily beta-alanine raises carnosine levels by about 64%. Ten weeks pushes that to 80%. The loading happens every day, not just on training days, and skipping days resets the clock. The scoop you took before this morning's session contributed almost nothing to today's workout. It contributed to next month's. The ingredient in your pre-workout that actually delivers today works through a completely different mechanism.

You cannot shortcut the process by swallowing carnosine directly. An enzyme in your blood breaks it apart before it reaches muscle tissue. Beta-alanine is the only route in.

Citrulline takes a different route entirely. Your body converts it to arginine, which drives production of nitric oxide, the molecule that widens blood vessels and delivers more oxygen to working muscles. The pump you feel during a set is partly this vasodilation at work. What you do not feel is the second mechanism: citrulline also clears ammonia through the urea cycle, removing one of the fatigue signals that builds up during sustained effort.

Both pathways are real. Both are small. Beta-alanine's measured benefit lands at 0.18, roughly the difference between your last rep feeling impossible and feeling merely very hard. Citrulline's measured effect is even smaller, at 0.16. Citrulline's evidence is also less settled than beta-alanine's. The International Society of Sports Nutrition published a position stand confirming beta-alanine's mechanism and loading protocol. Citrulline has no equivalent consensus document. Remove one influential trial from the citrulline meta-analysis, and the overall effect drops below statistical significance. The certainty behind these two ingredients is not equal, and treating them the same way would be the kind of simplification the label on your pre-workout already makes.

Two compounds, two mechanisms, and neither one announces itself through sensation. The tingle was a side effect wearing the costume of proof. The pump was a cosmetic signal playing the role of performance. The chemistry that matters takes weeks to build, seconds to overlook, and zero sensation to confirm.
